The Umzumbe Surfriders Club is an initiative to create a sustainable platform for kids at grass-roots level to access, progress and excel in the sport of surfing. Due to the lack of support from government and local resources, this initiative looks to attract sponsorship from the corporate world, the surfing industry and compassionate individuals in the provision of basic surfing equipment and materials for the progress of the immense talent that is waiting to be unearthed in Umzumbe.

THE IDEA
The resources will be used to provide; water safety & proficiency lessons, surfing tuition in the form of a surf school, surfboards for the teaching of learners as well as competing in competitions, rash vests, leashes, wax, board-repairing materials, hosting regular local competitions, transport and accommodation for provincial competitions and remuneration for local surf instructors. Bruce Rudling will be the administrator of the club, as he has been involved with South Coast development programmes since the late ‘80s, often supplying his time and resources for free. Bruce has also earned the respect of the community through his selfless contributions over the last 20 years.
It is our dream that once established; the Umzumbe Surfriders Club will be a pilot structure and act as a catalyst to kick-start similar initiatives in other impoverished areas of KZN and the rest of South Africa, spreading the stoke of surfing to the grass roots in a sustainable manner.
